Figure Skate

Freestyle skating is a style which involves complex spins and jumps in a program, usually performed to music. It combines dance skills with athletic ability and flexibility, the more complex the jump or spin, the more points it is awarded by the judges.
Freestyle jumps are classed a singles, doubles, triples or quads, depending on how many full rotations in the air the skater completes before they land. Jumps are known as edge jumps if they generate the lifting force from the edge of the blade, or toe jumps if the pick is planted in the ice prior to the jump.

Then there are the transitions from forward to backward skating (and vice versa) such as 3 turns, Mowhawks, rockers and counters.

Freestyle skates need to be both strong on the sides to protect the ankle joint when landing jumps, and flexible enough to allow the skater to bend at the knee. The soles and uppers will generally be made from leather and the blades will be precision engineered from case hardened steel. The tops of the boots on a Freestyle model will be high enough to offer maximum support without compromising flexibility.
